Burry Holmes Warning Beacon Relic

Often mistaken for a relic of Gower's defensive structures from W2, this circular base on Burry Holms islet is actually all that survives of  a warning light constructed on the island's high point in 1921. This new beacon officially took over guiding maritime traffic into the Loughor Estuary and the nearby ports after the more northernly, wave-swept, cast-iron Whiteford Lighthouse was decommissioned and extinguished by Trinity House in the same year. The automated beacon originally stood 12 feet tall and flashed twice every 12 seconds. It safely guided local shipping for several decades until it was dismantled in 1966, leaving behind only this circular concrete disk as a marker of Gower's industrial maritime history.
