Visitors to Rhossili who use the National Trust car park will no doubt be familiar with this iconic wicker sculpure by the Gower based artis Mel Bastier. The statue references the ancient history of the nearby islet of Worm's Head, named 'Wurme', meaning Sea Serpent by Viking invaders, in reference the islet's striking appearance. Legend tells that Sweyne Forkbeard led the invasion here, and his name is associated with the naming of Gower's closest city, Swansea. His name has also been (incorrectly) attributed to the two Neolithic burial sites atop Rhossili Downs, which predate Sweyne Forkbeard by many millennia.
